WORK 01
The Poster
The theme I chose to focus on for the 39th year of the Wicked Queer Film Festival was connection. 2023’s festival would be the first festival since COVID to have a full physical presence, and I wanted to represent the connection festival attendees would have not just with the films they’re watching, but with the audience around them as well.
The imagery of the film strip breaking through the ‘screen’ and acting as a link to the viewer was directly inspired by a queer freedom day event poster from the 80s. Wicked Queer as an organization has deep roots in activism (the festival launched in 1984, and was the first LGBT-themed film series featured at a commercial theater in Boston), and I wanted to indirectly refer to that history in the final design.
I created two versions of the main poster- one with a rectangular screen (resembling a theater screen) and another with a circular background. I’m more partial to the circular version, but I love both!
WORK 02
The Program Guide
While I liked the geometric design of last year’s program guide, I wanted to clean up the design and make the guide more accessible. Trying to fit 40+ programs/features on one page is always a challenge (something I affectionately refer to as ‘tetris-ing’ to the WQ Team), not to mention making that information clear to someone on first glance without overwhelming them. Compared to the previous design, I made sure the individual day blocks had clear backgrounds and had the dates front and center within the blocks.
